Discovering my true self and higher purpose has been a sometimes slow process. Some people have experienced major ahha type moments where clarity came like a blazing light or loud voice, but for me, it’s often felt like finding a needle in the haystack.
We are all different and our journeys reflect the reality that we are each called in ways uniquely suited to our soul’s evolution. Even for those with more immediate and life-changing events, the process of continuous growth is somewhat like peeling an onion.
We start with the hard, dry outer layer of skin. This is the layer that protects us. Much like the layer of the onion that protected it while growing in the ground, it keeps the softer, sweeter part hidden beneath until it’s ready. Life can be difficult at times, and it’s this hard surface around us that protects us. But the sweetest part of the onion lies beneath (especially a sweet Walla Walla) and to access it requires either cutting into it or methodically unwrapping the layers.
We’ve all experienced peeling an onion and know at some point we come to tears. There’s a love-hate kinda thing with onions. To get to the best part often requires enduring tears along the way. The journey into our souls is no different. There are times as we peel the onion back or cut deeply into its core that the sting comes forth and tears flow. In my journey, there has been many tears – it’s inevitable. Yet we know to access the soft and sweet inside truth of who we are comes with tears.
I don’t think we get to the sweetest part of the onion until later in life or as we transition into our soul’s home. Being persistent though is the key. If you stop peeling back the layers of who you are, you may suspend the tears for a time, but you sacrifice the opportunity to find the sweet core. Our journeys should be a continuous process of peeling the layers away. It saddens me to encounter people who have simply set the onion of their lives aside and have surrendered. Like an onion, if you quit peeling and set it aside, the outside layer eventually hardens once again.
So keep peeling. Don’t let the occasional sting that comes from peeling back the layers of your true self stop you. Remember the sweet core still awaits you and if you keep working at it, you’ll eventually reap the harvest.
