I will apologize in advance for a bit of a rant, but this topic is really important to me.
This has been another week where it seems that civility and basic human respect have been under assault. Without getting overly political, the recent actions by a member of Congress to turn a very difficult time for a family into a seemingly self-serving publicity stunt has been nothing short of repulsive. Having served on active duty, the most difficult thing for a family to embrace is the knowledge that a loved one is returning home sooner than expected but no longer alive. Since when did such a solemn and difficult time for a family become a reason to take advantage of those in grieving? This member’s even more recent comments that the situation has turned her into a ‘rock star’ was even more disgusting.
What comes to me is that we are becoming a people who have lost touch with basic human respect and dignity. The language used by politicians, celebrities, and the general public to describe others has become increasingly personal and nasty. Since when did a disagreement between people call for using profanity or using name-calling to such a degree? It’s absolutely disgusting to see how people treat each other just because they hold different perspectives. When we use such harsh terms to talk about another human, we simply expose the most darkest and debased side of ourselves. We have killed the sense of true respect and dignity in ourselves. Is it any wonder then when we personally experience a lack of respect or dignity? We get what we give.
While there are many things about our present government that I dislike or disagree with, the last thing I choose to do is to use profanity or other disgusting terms to describe another human. I can be critical of their behaviors and decisions, but still hold respect for the office they are in and their responsibilities. After all, elections have consequences and the appropriate and respectful way to voice disagreement in government is the voting box. This goes much further though. I refuse to listen to those in the media or public (even close associates and friends) who choose to peddle in this garbage. The old adage of ‘if you have nothing good to say, then say nothing’ is sage advice many seem to have lost. So I refuse to read or listen to anyone that chooses to use words of division or delves into name-calling just to make a point. I’m sorry if I don’t read your posts or if I’m not current on some topics, but I refuse to fill my heart with such trash.
Lastly, for those who have never served in the military or had a close friend or family member that has served, I think it best you leave the topic of those killed or wounded in action to those who have that personal experience. When you have put your life on the line for the Nation, you enter a sacred bond with all those who have likewise served. When we lose a fellow soldier, sailor, airman, or marine, we all feel the loss. Best that those who choose to capitalize on this to gain political points just sit back and shut up.
