Venus opposed Pluto today. As I reflected this morning, the image that clearly came to me was that of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. The Goddess love of Venus is staring direct across the vast expanse of space at the dark and shadowed energy of Pluto. This image prompted me to go deeper into the significance of this transit and I asked myself a simple question. When is evil or hate ever an expression of love? The opposition of Venus and Pluto is a strong reminder that light and darkness battle within us all and challenges us to examine our deepest feelings and motivation.
Another aspect of my reflection was that Venus sits close to the Sun as a positive and warm reflection compared to Pluto distant and cold. What a contrast between the glow of the Goddess in love and the bitter cold that hate represents. When hate is present it’s like throwing a bucket of ice on a warm body. One way you can always tell when someone is trying to dress hate (the wolf) in love’s cloak (Venus) is that the air is frigid no matter how well dressed you are.
Hate is simply hate. No matter how much self-righteous indignation you may dress it up in, it remains hate. Love on the other hand stares at evil with empathy, light, and sorrow. Love asks what pain or suffering could drive another human to harbor such deep and hurtful feelings. Worse is the horrendous deeds rooted in deep-seated hate and anger that can result. Regardless of your position on a subject, when you act in hate or speak words of hate toward another, it is still simply hate. You can dress hate in a moral cloak or words of professed love, but in the end the wolf will always come out.
I’m reminded of the tragedy over the weekend where hate was met with hate. While some may see their opposition against others as coming from a place of love, when words and actions of harm or hate are used even in counter-protest, they are equally negative. You cannot dress hate or anger in pure white wool when the place it is coming from is vengeance, anger, or hate. The dark energy will eventually bleed through and hate once more will be what surfaces. The pure love embodied in Venus looks on situations and people like this with sorrow and seeks to bring light and hope. Yet what we have seen growing in our society have been attempts to dress darkness in a robe of Venus white while professing to be not only right, but morally superior and loving.
In this kind of polarized environment of extremes and rigidity, standing in love is like being in the middle . Taking neither side opens one up to being accused of being bigoted, racist, or unloving. Yet love comes from a place of empathy and doesn’t choose words or actions that bring harm or denigrate the dignity of another. It’s important in situations such as this to be the spirit of peace and light. That’s not to say there is acceptance for the destructive behaviors of others. You can stand against injustice without devolving into hate. In many cases, there is no attempt to disguise hate – it stands obviously on its own. In other cases, some attempt to dress their hate in robes of loving words that try to obscure or deflect the harshness that lies within their own hearts. This is where love stands sentry against any attempt to be deceived into believing the wolf dressed in pure white words is anything more than a wolf.
When people profess to stand for love and against hatred yet choose words or actions to describe others in strong negative terms, I question the authenticity of their love. The word ‘love’ itself is made cheap by their actions and stand in stark contrast. We may dislike people and stand against their principles and actions, but to love requires us to look on others with a sense of compassion and sorrow. Sorrow that they hold such hate in their hearts, sorrow that their upbringing may have affected them in such a negative way, and sorrow they feel compelled to shower their hate on others. Hate speech met with hate speech doesn’t produce love any more than two wrongs make a right.
I challenge you to reflect on how you respond to hate even when it’s cloaked like a wolf in Venus clothing. Do you share posts on social media that are hate-filled with a self-righteous feeling that your perspective is coming from a place of love? Do yo feel justified when you see others meeting violence with violence all in the name of moral justice? Or instead, is it sorrow, empathy, and light that wells up within you as you stand between Venus and Pluto willing to be the peace that we all so desperately need? When people stop trying to dress the wolf of hate within in a cloak of white, we might just discover what love truly is.
