Autumn is my favorite time of the year. Just as Scorpio season comes in, the trees shed the last of their leaves as they prepare for the coming winter months. I’ve been reflecting and conversing with a maple tree behind our patio. This tree had a challenging year much like many have experienced. At one point in the early fall, we had a brief snow followed by tremendous wind. In the process, one of the main upper branches snapped and eventually fell. Yet despite the open wound, the tree has continued to stand as the last of its leaves finally fell away.
The wisdom of this tree has been speaking to me a lot lately. As we approach winter here in Colorado, one could assume that the trees have gone dormant, waiting patiently until the warm sun of spring begins to awaken them from their nap. But this tree has shared a very different message and it has brought me great insight. While we may think the trees go to sleep for the long cold nights and storms, they are in fact, quite awake. They go within themselves, draw nourishment stored from warmer days, and their roots grow ever stronger as they prepare for the next year. In their sheer nakedness, they grow stronger.
Scorpio season is a great reminder that we must look into the shadows and dig deep within ourselves. We must face into the darkness and sink our roots ever deeper into our truth. Just as the trees shed their leaves, we also must shed things that are no longer serving us well. Tree has emphasized to me that this is a time of quiet reflection and courage, not time for sleeping. Standing naked to the cold nights and winter storms requires roots that keep tree warm and strong. The sap that runs deep like blood in our veins, keeps tree nourished when it appears there is nothing but bare bark. Tree reminded me that it is in these darkest of times each year that we have the opportunity to gain greater strength. The question tree has been asking me is if I’m prepared to shed what is no longer serving me and dig deep within myself for strength and truth.
Another lesson tree has been teaching me is that there is often more than what is obvious or visible. Stripped naked, tree calls us to see beauty in the simplicity of things. Without its leaves, we can now appreciate the beauty of its structure, even including the wounds suffered during the year. In a world so obsessed with the visible, we can easily overlook true beauty. Without its leaves, it’s easier to see how this majestic spirit is healing and how much it has grown since the last fall season. When we strip away the superficial in our lives, we can appreciate how much we have grown in the last year. Standing naked in the cold air, we come to see the bare truth of our lives and can celebrate another year while at the same time, acknowledging where we have been wounded.
This tree has become a special messenger to me and I’m grateful. Tree has called me to strip away all that is no longer serving me and stand tall with my roots growing ever deeper into our great Mother. Being rooted and grounded has also been a key message tree has been calling me to. Grounded in truth, love, and light. Mother Earth brings us back to our grounded self where we can understand what truly matters. The warmth of love runs freely through me like the sap that keeps tree nourished and warm in even the coldest and darkest of days. Perhaps we could all learn something from tree in these tumultuous times as we anxiously await the coming Cosmic energy shifts. For those with roots deep and grounded, the cold and bitter storms of the coming months will only draw us deeper and make us stronger.
