Fall is my favorite time of year. For me, it signals a time for reflection. What have I grown this year in my life and what is passing away. It’s also a great time to reflect on my spiritual harvest and consider how bountiful (or disappointing) the year has been.
Society is so focused on New Year’s resolutions and setting goals. But nature has a very different cycle and I prefer to align with our Great Mother’s rhythm rather than a calendar. It’s time to consider the spiritual seeds planted in the spring and how well things have gone. Did you nurture those seeds by attentive practice or did you leave things up to the flow of circumstances throughout the season? As you reflect on the harvest, are you satisfied with the results?
There is a biblical parable about sowing seeds. Some seeds fall on hard ground and quickly sprout and die because they lack soil and adequate moisture. Some fall among the weeds where they get choked off. Finally some seeds find fertile ground and generate a tremendous harvest. There is deep wisdom in this story. When you reflect on the spiritual seeds you planted this year, how many never had a chance because you simply didn’t keep a promise or commitment to yourself? How many seeds got choked off by ‘life’ and the many distractions you encountered? Finally, what harvest is left reflecting where you focused your attention, kept your promises, and truly grew?
The Universe is offering a great opportunity now for us to reflect more deeply on how we are doing. The lessons offered while Saturn was in retrograde are now becoming clear. It’s essential we embrace those lessons and begin to apply them. Take care to harvest carefully what is good and discard what has already rotted. Those fruits will be the nourishment you need as we enter the Winter season and the cosmic energy coming in December and January (and lasting through 2020) brings significant challenges.
Fall is also a good time to prepare for the next growing season. For me, the Fall and Spring equinox are major events (and Fall begins on the 23d). Fall is the time to harvest, clean up the garden, and prepare the soil of your spirit for the next season. As Fall ends and Winter comes, we begin to rely upon the fruits of the last year until we can once again plant. That doesn’t mean however we do nothing over the Winter. There are crops that favor the cold and we can find opportunities for continuing our growth. Some plants are brought inside, others hibernate, and yet others simply die.
The tender plants we bring inside for me are the jewels that I hope to keep healthy and growing despite the change in season. The perennials that hibernate reflect the lessons that may take more time to mature. These are lessons and karma that require multiple seasons to mature. When conditions are right, these will sprout once again, this time even more mature and stronger than the previous season. Finally, the annuals cannot survive the cold and slowly die. These for me represent the experiences and lessons I learned throughout the season whose time and benefit are complete.
So as you reflect on this Fall season, I encourage you to consider your own spiritual harvest. For the areas of your life you failed to nurture, consider what you can do now to prepare for a better harvest next time. For those things you allowed to distract you, endeavor to be better focused. Lastly, enjoy the harvest. If it’s not as bountiful as you had hoped, there will be new opportunities. This is the beauty of the seasons. You can always keep planting.
