Now that I have your attention, let’s focus on what intimacy truly means. I’ve heard the word intimacy described as ‘into me see’ as it describes the depths of connection that comes with a truly deep relationship. Unfortunately, like many words in the English language, intimacy has been hijacked and relegated to describe the physical dimension. This picture of intimacy though cheapens the inner joy that intimacy offers.
True intimacy starts from the inside first. ‘Into me see’ suggests a degree of self-love and confidence that invites others into your authentic core. In order to offer intimacy to another you must first know and deeply honor yourself. This is why sex is such a limiting definition when it comes to ‘being’ intimate. Instead, you can be truly intimate with others without sex. When put in a physical context, intimacy calls us to give fully of ourselves, heart, soul, then body. For the act of sex to be intimate demands the rest of us has already been fully exposed and embraced.
This is why in part sex can be such a one-dimensional act when the essential elements of intimacy are missing. ‘Into me see’ calls us to allow another to see the vulnerable and fragile elements of who we are on the inside transcending how we may physically appear. To be attractive in this sense is like turning our skin inside-out. Physical attractiveness becomes less important when you are able to peer deeply into the eyes of another and see the beauty of their soul.
I am privileged to know many people in a deeply intimate way. We have shared hearts and souls in ways that no physical act could ever replace. In a world that hungers for intimacy it’s important to appreciate the beauty and deep connection that comes when we share our authentic love and self with others. Instead of seeing someone as fat, ugly, mean, or otherwise unattractive, it’s a call to respect and honor the star seed standing before us. We are all created from the same Cosmic love source regardless of what we see or hear. It’s when we embrace the divine within each other that we open the door to intimacy and this happens long before there is any physical act.
Intimacy starts with you. If you long for intimate relationships, you have to embrace the divine within and come to love yourself for who you are right now in this moment. From this place, we must be willing to be vulnerable enough to open the door of our soul and invite others in. This degree of vulnerability can be frightening as we question if our true self is enough or will be accepted. To find intimacy risks being rejected and at times perhaps ridiculed. At the end of the day though to not risk at all opens the real possibility that you will continue to yearn for an intimacy that is illusive and shallow.
This isn’t necessarily a call to walk around like an open book. Intimacy isn’t meant for every relationship or encounter. I would be an emotional basket-case if I walked around with my heart on my sleeve. There remain many who stand ready to take advantage of such vulnerability or openness. On the other hand, intimacy shouldn’t be constrained to a significant other in your life. To stand guard at the door of your soul like a bouncer at a club admitting only the elite or favorites is to deny yourself the privilege, honor, and joy of many other incredible people.
Start with being intimate with yourself and realize that no matter how you appear, your opinions, values, or past, you are incredibly beautiful and divine just as you are. ‘Into me see’ is a way of life that opens limitless possibilities for love. When we become truly intimate with each other, we elevate the value of life and love.
So let’s get really intimate.
