I admit it’s easy to be in a state of awe and wonder when sitting by the ocean in Maui. The marvel of the ocean, whales everywhere you look, and the sheer beauty of the island is always inspiring. Living in awe of the beauty of creation is easier when surrounded by all things magical.
Living in awe though is a full-time endeavor. When we live in a perpetual state of awe, our perspectives on life, love, joy, and even pain are all endowed with the divine. Even when home in Colorado, I try to greet each day with gratitude. I am thankful for another day, grateful for health, and try to relish each moment. Living in the present allows me to see each passing minute as a wonder of creation.
Guarding against hate and anger are key to maintaining personal balance and strong physical health. Science has now affirmed that when we hold anger or hate in our bodies no matter the circumstance or target of our feelings, we poison ourselves. Our bodies are made to love and when we live in awe, we allow that deep authentic power to penetrate every cell of our bodies. It’s no different than what we choose to feed our bodies. A healthy diet and exercise is essential to sustaining our physical health. Yet we can undermine that work when we hold hate, anger, or any host of negative emotions in our bodies.
Feeding our spirits with love is just as essential for our health as the food we consume. If you’ve ever wondered why you may find yourself in ill health, the first place to look is inside. What are you feeding yourself physically, emotionally, and spiritually? Our thoughts can create vibrant health or work against us. Living in awe with a spirit of gratitude is as essential for health as spending hours at the gym or eating wholesome foods. I have come to believe that health starts with my thoughts and how I choose to approach life in general. I guard against any negative feelings and work to release them quickly before they take root in my body.
Blaming circumstances or others for poor health is a trap. Often when we struggle to maintain our health, the first place to look is the health of our hearts and spirit. While not every physical ailment can be cured or corrected immediately with a change of heart or attitude, it is the first place to look. When you live in joy and gratitude, your body breathes in that same energy and feeds your body with a rush of chemicals that boost your immune system and works to block illness. This is why stress for example is a killer and often the root of heart disease and other ailments. Stress is amplified when we hold hate or anger inside and is really amped up when we express it in any way.
Living in awe therefore is not just a spiritual practice. It is an essential element of living healthy. With gratitude as our guide, we then attract more of what supports us and repels that which is bad for our health. Start each morning with gratitude and guard against allowing negative thoughts and emotions. Embrace this practice and you may just find yourself stronger, healthier, and even more pleasant to be with.
