I’ve been reflecting deeply of late on life’s really big question. You might wonder what that question is. The question that has been resting with me is ‘what is the purpose of life’? More important, ‘what is the purpose of my life’? Those that know me well also know this question has been with me for quite some time. Lately though I’ve been going deeper still.
I’m incredibly encouraged when I find younger people who are also grappling with these questions. I admit that in my own journey, it wasn’t until I was in my 40s that this question suddenly become important. I’ve found though this isn’t unusual. In fact, many don’t get around to pondering this until life has roughed them up a bit. Many come to a point where you realize that chasing after a career, making money, buying a house, driving a nice car, or whatever else material begins to lose its meaning.
For some it’s a sudden wake-up call and others (like myself) find these questions growing stronger. What is truly important though is finding yourself at that intersection where you’re ready to delve into the fundamental truths of what life is all about. At times the inquiry is inspiring and others it can be downright depressing. Yet at the end of the day, how you choose to address these questions determines your future. Now for the key answers I’ve discovered for myself.
The purpose of life – the purpose of my life – is simply to love. Our journeys are a continuous path to discover and love. When you love or experience love from another, you are living in your purpose. For some of you this may feel somewhat hollow or deflating, but reflect for a moment on what love really is. In love, we find our connection to that bigger, cosmic, universal existence. Love transcends everything. When we experience love, we are no longer bound by time or what we perceive as the material universe.
Think of a moment or situation where you were so immersed in love that you lost all track of time. You become so focused that nothing else matters. You are lost in the experience. This is where we step into the eternal – this is where we experience heaven on earth. All the world’s ancient traditions are founded on this simple principle. So the reason for our existence is to learn the language of love and to share that with all of creation.
We are so connected to the material universe that we often find it difficult to embrace this simple truth. In the 1997 movie Contact, there is a scene where Dr. Arroway is confronted by the religious leader Palmer Joss with a simple question. Palmer asks Ellen did she love her father. Ellen replies “yes, very much”. At that point, Palmer challenges her to prove it. Love is the energy of the universe and cannot be measured, studied, or in some way contained in a lab experiment. Yet we don’t question love when we experience it – it simply exists.
All of creation is nothing more than a pulsing stream of love. It’s only when we tune into the right frequency that we experience it. Expressions of love may take on material forms (such as a letter, embrace, or gesture), but they are not love. As humans, we have tremendous capacity to love and it is our highest purpose. We are meant to be in connection with each other, our Earth, living creatures, in fact all of creation. When we marvel at the sunrise or have a moment of admiration during a hike, we are experiencing love. Our obligation therefore is to reflect it back.
In a world that seems to be spiraling downward, it is our highest duty to call forth love. So next time you experience something or someone that irritates or angers you, remember this simple truth. If you want to live into your highest purpose, it is love that you must bring forth. The purpose of your life and mine is embodied in this one invisible truth – love.
I believe in the transformative power of human connection to elevate joy, restore balance, and support inner healing as you seek your highest purpose. My purpose in life is to be a guide, to share the wisdom of the Universe I’ve been gifted with, and to see others succeed. Nothing brings me greater joy than to see others step into their purpose in a vibrant and highly energetic way.
