Some time ago I posted insights on the masks that we wear. We often develop a variety of masks (or roles if you will) that serve to support us in particular situations while attempting to protect us from potential harm. While masks can serve a meaningful purpose, they often become addictive. But sooner or later we find ourselves in a situation where as the old story goes ‘the emperor has no clothes’ and we stand naked.
The real downside of wearing masks is that we begin believing it is the mask that represents who we truly are. Over time we get so accustomed to the facade that we no longer recognize or acknowledge our true self. It becomes truly fearful to consider taking it off for fear what others and even ourselves will see. Think about the Phantom of the Opera or the solitary man ‘V’ in the movie ‘V for Vendetta’ where the characters hide behind a mask certain the world would reject them should they see the true person within. We become so convinced of our inner ugliness, that the fear of living a lie feels less painful than potential rejection. It is often this fear that keeps us from living our purpose.
To thrive in peace and harmony, we must first be comfortable in our own native skin. It would be like going out for a night on the town without makeup and fine clothing. To live in your highest purpose though requires you to go ‘au natural’ from the inside out. Being authentic to who you are is a bold and courageous act; it is a rebellious act. It is an act of defiance that signals to the world that you will not conform or bend. Your uniqueness is what makes you beautiful and valuable.
So as we look into this new year, think about discarding the masks you wear and instead go skinny-dipping in the pool of the cosmos. Be who you truly are. While you may feel as if the emperor has no clothes, you may just find yourself surrounded by others. It often takes just one person to strip down and dive in to encourage others to do the same.
I believe in the transformative power of human connection to elevate joy, restore balance, and support inner healing as you seek your highest purpose. My purpose in life is to be a guide, to share the wisdom of the Universe I’ve been gifted with, and to see others succeed. Nothing brings me greater joy than to see others step into their purpose in a vibrant and highly energetic way.
