There is no such thing as an “original” idea. Now before you write me off as having lost my mind, let me lay a foundation and connect a few dots.
Over the last several weeks, I’ve had opportunities to work with a number of initiatives to do brainstorming and ideation. What I’ve observed over years of working with creative individuals and teams though is that people get really attached to their ideas. Now if you’re a regular follower of my posts, you’re very likely a spiritually oriented person. What you likely believe is that we are all divinely connected to the Cosmic Consciousness and that our thoughts are simply another form of energy. So with that as a foundation, let me explain why I don’t believe ideas have ownership.
What I see as the creative process is actually people catching insights or picking up ideas that already exist in the greater Collective. While this may sound a bit abstract, let me explain. There are many cases where two individuals from completely different parts of the world almost simultaneously come up with the same concept. Is that by accident? It’s not coincidence at all. What I believe happens is that people tune into this energy and manifest it in the form of an idea. Perhaps you’ve had the experience where you have thought of an idea yet didn’t act on it. Later you find that someone came up with the very same idea only to take it forward. This is where the Cosmos simply selected you to manifest that idea but you dropped the ball. Are you starting to see the connection?
In Western society, the sense of rugged individualism drives us to want to own our ideas. Yet in reality, we are simply the channel through which that energy has chosen to come forth. This brings me to the topic of plagiarism. I have seen some cases where the same or similar idea, words, or expressions are expressed but without a connection to its original source. Perhaps they were exposed to it at some point without recognizing its origin or they simply tuned into the same source through a different channel. I see this as simply manifesting a great idea through multiple channels. There are cases where either by intention or oversight, someone literally copies something that another had already manifested. In those cases, the plagiarism is often a reflection of low self-confidence or some other self-serving behavior. I don’t condone that behavior. But the unintentional case may truly be Spirit working through multiple outlets to get the word out.
What is true for me is that ideas don’t belong to any of us. We are simply called to be both good stewards of the Cosmic and Divine knowledge and called to manifest it. There is great mystery in the Akashic records and we all have equal access to this knowledge. In this space of Divine energy, we can connect to all that was, is, and will be in the future. When an idea comes to us, it’s a message from the Creator that we are called and privileged to be the pure channel through which it is being delivered. With that perspective in mind then, there is an awesome sense of humility in recognizing that what comes as a flash of brilliance really means we are tuned in.
Some of the most ferocious arguments come from people who believe they own their ideas. People can be ruthless and nasty when they believe someone has stolen their idea. I can understand that. Our thoughts are some of the most intimate and personal treasures we hold. Yet what comes through us is more a reflection of the awesome power of Cosmic energy. If you accept that our thoughts are nothing more than energy, is it possible we are simply conductors of energy and outlets? It’s much like the way electricity flows through your home. When an idea comes to you then, you are more like the appliance plugged into the outlet through which something gets accomplished.
So next time you find yourself in a situation where you feel offended that someone has stolen your idea, pause for a moment. If you see they have truly copied you in some self-serving way (intentional or not), then approach them with a spirit of empathy. It’s likely they are compensating for something they lack (self-confidence, acceptance, acknowledgment). In that spirit, you may be able to guide them to a more positive space.
On the other hand, if it’s possible or even likely they have no ill-will in heart, perhaps it’s an invitation to co-create as the message may be important enough that it was delivered to more than one channel. Lastly, if something comes to you, it’s very likely that Spirit is calling you to manifest it. If you choose to ignore it for some reason then, don’t feel offended if that same idea surfaces somewhere else. After all, you took a pass on it.
