For many of us, change is often an unwelcome guest particularly if it requires something of us. Yet for all the disruption that change often brings, it is the one thing we can count on. Change is a constant presence in our lives even if we’re living in a routine. No matter where you look or what you do, change is the companion that never leaves our side.
How we view and respond to change is the key to how it affects us. If change is something that is perceived as a negative, it’s likely we will resist it. But what we resist – persists. When we push back on change, it simply digs in its heels and stubbornly stands there until we embrace it. When we view change as a welcomed companion, we often find the process to be smoother and the results more positive. You see, everywhere you look, change is present. It can be something as simple as the weather or as dramatic as the loss of a job or loved one. That’s not to say that change is painless or easy, but how we choose to respond in that moment is a key determinant as to its ultimate affect on our lives.
The pain we often experience when change shows up is the invitation to improve. How we react speaks volumes as to what is happening within us. I know that the big changes in my life were often the catalyst I needed to wake up and realize the pattern I was in was no longer serving me. Yet without being confronted in the moment, I would have likely continued down the same path not realizing I had somewhere lost my way. When we get fixated on the road of life, we can miss the beautiful scenery around us and drive right past the exit to an even greater opportunity.
So next time your life is disrupted by an unexpected (or long ignored) change, take the opportunity to reflect upon the questions being asked of you. Embrace the moment and seek out the inner wisdom this opportunity represents. And remember, change is your companion not your enemy. Don’t resist the moment – live into it. Remember also that change is likely more stubborn and persistent than you are. The longer and harder you push back, the more likely the pain will be greater and the journey more arduous.
