Nutrition is a key component to health. As we’ve learned, what you put into your body has a significant impact on how you feel, your weight, energy, and so much more. Junk food or a high-fat diet is likely to manifest itself in disease and other ailments. It’s all pretty simple – garbage in, garbage out. The same is true in your spiritual life.
Think about it for a moment. If you feed your mind and heart a steady diet of garbage like hate, anger, fear, arrogance, etc…, you are setting yourself up for a spiritual breakdown. Your heart will become diseased and you will find yourself unhappy. Giving yourself a periodic dose of healthy nutrition is like eating fast food all week but then having a balanced meal on the weekend – it just doesn’t work that way. What about those who go on a crash diet? The spiritual equivalent is like going on a retreat or deciding you’re going to meditate daily but then give up when it doesn’t deliver immediate results. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase yo-yo diet – the same thing holds true in spirituality.
You can’t achieve harmony and spiritual joy in your life if you’re not staying focused on what you put into your mind and heart. Think about what you watch on TV, who you consider your circle of friends, the places you hang out, and most importantly, your own words and actions. All of these are your spiritual food. If the majority of these things bring negative, then your spiritual health will suffer. For example, just recently, I made a commitment to go on a diet of news. There is not a single news source today that offers a positive and supportive perspective. For some time now, I’ve maintained a discipline of ignoring social media posts that are obviously political because it’s all inherently us versus them. Putting that crap into my heart and soul is the equivalent of binge drinking or sitting in front of the TV with a bag of Cheetos. In the end, it really doesn’t feel good, still leaves a hole, and created significant injury.
So if living a life of harmony and satisfaction is what you value, think carefully about what you’re feeding your heart and soul. Take out the calorie counter and make sure you’re not over-indulging and you’ve got balance that favors what you truly seek. Perhaps it’s time to do a lifestyle change and abandon those bad habits that keep holding you back. Nutrition is a key to successful living and so taking care of the entire package (mind, body, and soul) is what it takes.
