As I reflected this morning before stepping out the door, I focused on my own morning ritual and habit. How we start our day truly sets the tone and influences how things will go. Nutritionists often tell us the most important meal of the day is breakfast. What we eat to start out day provides us with the essential fuel that carries us. How we start our day spiritually and emotionally then is really not very different.
When I wake up each day, I offer gratitude for the gift of the new day before I even get out of bed. I start a pot of coffee, do some reading, then spend some quiet time. The quality and focus of that quiet time sets the tone for the rest of my day. I was keenly aware this morning that my day was packed full of meetings. Instead of reflecting upon a lengthy to-do list and the hectic schedule ahead, I focused my reflection on what intention I wanted to guide my day. Today’s intention was peace. I selected several crystals to use as a way of reminding me and I established other things that would keep me grounded.
So as my day started, I found my first meeting went 30 minutes late and then it was one meeting after another while squeezing in emails and working other actions. Yet throughout the day, I was reminded that peace was my intention. Despite numerous interruptions and unexpected changes, I remained focused and was able to give each person or activity my undivided attention. As I ended my day, it was peace that was still present. Reflecting on my day gave me satisfaction. While I didn’t complete everything I wanted to, I didn’t feel stressed or worried. I knew I had done my best and despite the chaos, I remained composed and still.
Reflect on how you start your own day. Most of us have morning rituals or habits. It’s usually the same process day after day. How you start your day though determines the overall tone. If you start by reflecting about all the things you have to get done, the hectic schedule ahead, and are stressed before you even really get started, you’re more likely to find yourself frustrated and agitated throughout the day. As you finish the day, you may already be concerned about all the unfinished business you left behind and worried about how the next day will be. This is how people burn out if they’re not more mindful. Starting your day without honoring your emotional and spiritual health is like running out of the door without breakfast – you’re off to an agitated start and your body is already flashing the warning light.
You don’t have to live as if you’re on a giant hamster wheel seemingly running furiously to no where. Instead, start each day with gratitude and thanks for the new day – there are some who won’t be given that gift. Before your feet even hit the floor, take a few moments, breathe deeply and be grateful. Take some time each morning to set an intention for your day and establish some reminders that will bring you back to that intention throughout the day. Be deliberate about this. At the end of the day, reflect back on how well you did. Let go of those instances where perhaps you got distracted or off course for tomorrow is another day. Be at peace with how things went and accept what you could have done better.
If you want your day to be more in balance and focused, you have to feed your spirit and soul with a nutritious breakfast of reflection, balance, and intention setting. Let that food be on a setting of quiet and gratitude, place your intention on the plate, then allow it to fuel you throughout the day. It’s a lot more satisfying then ending the day with an upset stomach or hunger pangs because you forgot to feed your spiritual and emotional self. Think of how things go if you skip breakfast and remember your soul needs fed as well.
