I’ve come to believe there are two paths on your life journey – the one you choose and the one you allow others choose for you. The power to manifest begins and ends with you. For some this idea is exhilarating and empowering and others find it terrifying. Yet at the end of the day, the path you travel is one you have chosen either by intention or by default.
So many in life find it easier to blame others for their circumstances because it requires no action and no accountability. Some may claim it may be matters of race, sex, nationality, culture, or other environmental factors that are labeled the culprit. At the end of the day no matter what source you choose, you have allowed someone or something else to select your path. If you have chosen to relinquish your life’s journey to someone or something else, you also give up your right and ability to control the outcome.
One element often common in people who have given up control over their life path is they still expect better outcomes. They truly expect they deserve or have the right to something they have surrendered to others. While the logic of this makes no sense, they somehow believe their lives should be better or that someone else is responsible for their happiness. You can see this in relationships where one partner believes the other has a duty to make them happy. You also see this at the society level where some truly believe that the community owes them. The element in common in these instances though is that regardless of how much or little they may receive, they are never truly satisfied or happy. A key point is that when you relinquish control over your path, you have to be willing to settle with whatever they choose to offer you.
On the other hand, the path of intention puts you in the driver’s seat. You have the opportunity to set the agenda and guide your life down a path of your own choice. While many of the same environmental factors that affect others may be present, you can choose to avoid them, leverage them, or transform them in some way. You become not only the design artist, but the architect, builder, and occupant of the structure you create. For those who embrace this perspective find they have greater control. They have learned that happiness begins within and when things don’t go quite right, they move around, over, or through the obstacle instead of waiting endlessly for someone to rescue them.
Is your life where you want it to be right now? Is happiness a permanent resident in your personal space? Do you believe you are on your life’s path? If the answer to any or all of these questions is no, then ask yourself what you’re doing about it. If you find yourself pointing to someone or something blocking you or holding you back, then you have surrendered your path and won’t be successful in achieving your objectives until you take back control.
The path to your future lies before you and God is waiting to assist you on your journey. But you can’t steer a parked car and you can’t stay on the path if you’re driving down the road focusing on the rear view mirror. Your journey starts and ends with you. If you chart out your journey and know where you want to go, would you jump into the passenger seat and leave it up to someone else (even a complete stranger) to read your mind and do the driving for you? Of course not – that’s ridiculous. Why then would you do this in your life? Get behind the wheel and drive.
