It seems of late that so many people live in upset. Whether it’s career, politics, relationship, or any other number of things, people seem to be not only in upset, but persisting in it. They are perpetually agitated or unnerved by life in general. Why?
Being in upset can be an early indicator that you need to shift or change. It’s a great predictor that something in your life is out of balance or not serving you. Recognizing you’re in upset then can be a good thing. However, not knowing how to move from upset into upside creates stress. When you decide to simply remain in upset, you are surrendering to the very thing that generated the feeling in the first place.
When I see people in perpetual upset it’s usually an indicator that they either haven’t identified the underlying source or reason behind it, or don’t have the courage to embrace the situation and take action. My good friend and author Tori Hartman reminds people that “how you relate to the issue, is the issue” meaning that being in upset is simply the signal that you need to go deeper. If something upsets you and you choose not to step into it and move forward, then you are likely not dealing with the underlying lesson to be learned. On the other hand, if your upset leads you to action, then you begin to address the issue in a more productive way.
Moving from upset to upside then is all about embracing the underlying issue, owning it, and then choosing to use that emotional energy to move in a positive direction. At that point, what was a potential obstacle or issue that was unnerving becomes a lesson that allows you to step into a higher place. The upsetting issues in our lives are simply there to point us to a new and better place. If you remain in upset, you eventually become hostage to that situation and the longer you stay, the harder and more painful it becomes to move through it.
It’s often said that the lessons we choose not to learn only come back to us later in more powerful and often painful ways. Isn’t it much better then to recognize the upset, embrace the lesson, and then choose the higher path (the upside)?
So next time you find yourself in upset, step boldly into the moment, embrace the lesson, and then move forward. Use the energy of your upset to propel you to the upside. It all starts with a simple act of courage and willingness to own the moment and not allow yourself to remain stuck there. More on this topic in future posts.
