I was inspired today by David Palmer (The LeoKing) who took a stand for treating people with fairness and truth yet in the process generated some amount of controversy and drama. As I listened to him, it reminded me of the importance of standing tall in the midst of what can sometimes be a real storm. It was a clear reminder that when you choose to stand in the Light, you will attract attention and some will choose to exploit that to advance their own agendas or personal objectives.
While hurricane Harvey continues to wreak havoc on Texas, I think standing in your truth can sometimes be compared to being deluged by the torrential rain of critics. Yet like the many ordinary citizens who have braved the elements to help others, standing in the storm is not only a worthy cause, but is essential to guiding others to safety. Some people will always find ways to be critical when you choose to use your Light to shine into dark places. We often don’t respond well when our actions or words are criticized even when what we’ve done has inflicted injury upon another. We don’t like to admit that we may have hurt others while intending something more loving and helpful.
Having the courage to point out when someone’s words or actions have inflicted injury on others is rarely easy. This is particularly true when the choice to speak your truth is almost certainly to invite a reaction. It may be easier in the moment to simply be quiet, but the pain only grows in the vacuum of silence. When we choose to hold back, we actually amplify the negative. I remember as a child when I had a wound that it was often best to let fresh air accelerate the healing as opposed to trying to cover it up. The old adage of ‘sticks and stones’ is rarely sage advice and certainly not true. Words are the most powerful weapon we as humans possess and when we use our words to hurt others, the wound is deep and lasting.
When it’s our words that caused harm, we often try to make the situation into right versus wrong. I’ve found this perspective almost always leads to even greater division. Instead, when we embrace the realization that our words or actions inflicted harm on another, we can step into the storm and embrace the moment. Accepting that we have hurt someone opens the door to healing like letting fresh air in. Rather than being defensive or argumentative, it creates opportunities for reconciliation. Most of us don’t seek to intentionally hurt someone and don’t always realize that what was intended was not exactly how it was received. This allows us to step into the other person’s world and try to understand and appreciate how they may have felt in that moment.
There are times when standing in the Light is sure to attract critics. Like a light that shines in the darkness attracts unwanted bugs, our own Light can act like a magnet for pests. And it seems that as more critics begin circling, it attracts even more until the sound of buzzing in the air is deafening. Yet being willing to leave your Light on enables those who value it as a beacon to find their way. So as I listened to David today, it was in that spirit I found his own truth shining forth. It wasn’t about being right, wrong, or justified, it was a heart-centered expression of what his truth stands for and it was that Light that drew me ever closer. He was taking a stand and despite the buzz, he was willing to be a beacon encouraging others to seek their own deep and authentic truth.
Think of times when you’ve stood as that Light. At times you may have been tempted to turn off the switch and let the critics drift back into the darkness just to get the buzzing to stop. Yet if you do so, you also extinguish the beacon that others were relying upon to find their way. Just remember that being a Light bearer is often not easy and opens you to critics who want nothing more than to turn your energy off. But in the end, if you continue to shine strong and bright, those who truly value and embrace your heart-centered message will find their way home.
