Today I was drawn to reflect upon the passage in the Gospel of John between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. For those not familiar with the story, Jesus and his disciples journey to Samaria. They stop at a well and his disciples go to town for food. While at the well, a woman approaches. In the story, Jesus speaks to the woman (a taboo in that time) and suggests to the woman that the water he offers is “living water” and will quench thirst for eternity. Perplexed, the woman points out the well is deep and he has nothing to draw water from it. It’s at that point he reveals to the woman he knows much more about her and she realizes he is more than a simple traveler – he is in fact a seer.
This story has some insightful things to ponder. Today’s full Moon lunar eclipse in Aquarius is accompanied with overcast weather and steady rain here in Denver. Aquarius is the water bearer and under the power of this full Moon, it reminds us of the importance of connecting with what lies hidden yet nourishing in our lives. While the Moon cannot be seen behind the clouds, it’s light is still reflecting upon us. As I reflect upon the symbolism, there are several things that challenge me and I hope others.
First, as the water bearer, Aquarius challenges us to consider in what ways we we bringing “living water” to ourselves and others. With the powerful light of the full moon (even though it’s hidden), can we shine a light on the areas of our lives that bring life-giving water to others? Water is an essential element of life. Most of our bodies are made of water. So do we honor the life-giving water within ourselves? In what way can we bring that same water to others and help them to find within themselves the refreshing and nourishing flow of life?
Second is the light of the Moon. For me, the Moon has significant meaning. The Archangel Haniel is the guardian of the Moon and bears the gifts of intuition and our connection with emotions. Despite the clouds that obscure the full light of this Moon, I am still mindful of its power and influence in my own life. What is this Moon illuminating in your life? What is this Moon asking you to look deeper into? How can the power of this full Moon guide you to see what you have been hiding emotionally in your life?
Third is the eclipse. While this eclipse wasn’t visible in the northern hemisphere, it still reminds us that there are times when the light is dimmed by an obstruction. Life is like this at times and we can often feel as if we are wandering around a strange room with the lights out. In these moments, we can panic as we try to find our way out. Often we simply need to pause and reflect for a moment before the light begins to come through once again. At this point, we can see the path once more and move forward again.
When you put the pieces together between the full Moon, lunar eclipse, and Aquarius the water bearer, there is a call to be “living water” for yourself and others and to reflect the soft and soothing light for others, especially when they feel as if the lights have been turned out. To love yourself and drink from this well is the place to start. Without drinking of this life-giving water, we have nothing to offer others. We are also called to be the one that draws from the well and offer others who may not possess a bucket to find refreshment. Not a day passes that I don’t have the opportunity to be Aquarius (the water bearer) to someone. This challenges me to not be so self-absorbed in my own thirst that I can’t share water with others. Lastly is the illumination that is inspired by this full Moon. This is a call to be willing to let this light penetrate the depths of my soul and challenge me to embrace my own weaknesses, accept my imperfections, and reflect back the peace and love from within.
When the Moon is full, it is simply reflecting the light of the Sun in all its glory. How are you being a reflection of the light of others and bringing the glory of the Sun into other’s lives? Being a mirror of the wonderful light of others is another aspect a full Moon calls forth. While the eclipse may darken this Moon for a time, it’s only a passing moment and reminds us that the light was and always is there. Sometimes it’s a matter of letting a little time pass before we shine once again.
