I’ve heard it said and seen it for myself that some live in quiet desperation. How incredibly sad to say this, but the other day, I was reminded of how unfortunately true it may be.
I had a quick trip to the Washington DC area and after checking into my room decided to take a walk. It was a humid evening but the temperature was pleasant and the chance to stretch my legs after a 3-hour flight was welcomed. When I walk, I like to keep my eyes up and acknowledge each person I pass and be friendly. It may be a simple nod, smile, or even a brief hello. I feel like it’s my way of spreading light if only for the moment and acknowledging the life and spirit of others.
My walk took me along busy sidewalks and side streets for about 2 miles. Along the way I encountered countless people. What struck me was that every (and I mean every) person I passed peered down at the ground in an almost lifeless trance. It was as if the very life had been sucked out of them and they were simply going through the motions. I felt as if I had been dropped into a zombie asylum and the stone-faced figures around me were moving about like robots. Not a single person I met even looked up enough for me to greet them. I thought briefly I was living in an episode of the Walking Dead. Now I wasn’t at all concerned about being eaten or harmed, but I did feel as if the very life and light of the Universe had been completely sucked out.
I started to become overwhelmed with sadness. I’m sure that some were absorbed in their own world or thinking about evening plans. Others perhaps had a rough day and wanted time to decompress. And others may have been still working on solving a problem that had plagued their day. I had no way of knowing what was going on in each person’s life. But my experience wasn’t isolated to a simple few. Every single person I passed – dozens of them – gave no indication that they were even connected to the rest of their body. Every one of them had this fixed gaze and expressionless appearance. My guides then brought the picture of zombie apocalypse to mind and as I observed people, I began to see how much that related to my experience.
Living life without purpose and hope has got to be hell on earth. When going through your day perhaps in a job you hate, with colleagues you distrust, in a location you don’t care for, creates a toxic brew that could literally make you comatose if you keep drinking it. Some people feel trapped inside a shell where the job they hate is the only jail cell they see able to sustain the little bit of life they still have. This is simply the reason for the phrase living in quiet desperation. The question to ponder then is if an anecdote has been developed to help those who want to wake up.
I have learned throughout the years that not everyone wants to wake up. Living like a zombie can isolate one from the realization and pain that they are unhappy and miserable. Keeping that in mind, the first step in the process is guiding people to a place of hope. Help others to see that the jail cell they are living in comes with the key hanging on the wall beside them. This initial step may only get them free from the small cell they have occupied in their head, but not the entire prison. Yet having the opportunity to breathe the fresh air of the prison courtyard is a start. It’s only when someone begins to realize once again that there are still places in this world where the air is clear, the sun warm, and the sky blue, that they can begin to dream again and slowly wake up from the zombie existence they trapped themselves in.
More on these thoughts in coming articles so stay tuned …. there is hope and there can be a happier ending.
